Essay Brief 

You are required to write a 2,000-word essay examining the role of supervision in social care, in supporting critical reflection and the shaping of professional identity in line with best practice.

Your essay should demonstrate your understanding of the topic, by ensuring to address the following Learning Outcomes (LOs) and make reference to the respective Social Care Workers’ Standards of Proficiency (SOPs):

  1. Learning Outcome One: Explain and demonstrate the purpose and function of professional structured supervision within the social care profession. Within your discussion you should make reference to the following SOPs: D4:2 & D5:18 (see below further details)
  2. Learning Outcome Two: Identify the importance of engaging in self-reflection and inquiry in supervision, to inform practice and develop your professional identity. Within your discussion you should make reference to the following SOPs: D1:2; D3:9,10, D4:1,2,3,5,6. (see below further details)
  3. Learning Outcome Six: To gain an insight into profession specific and interprofessional education in Social Care Practice.

Your essay should be typed and include a completed TUS essay cover sheet (available on your module Moodle page), brief introduction, main body, a succinct conclusion and a bibliography.

Referencing Guidelines

The discussion throughout this essay must at all times be supported by accurately referenced research in the style of Harvard. The research should be accumulated from various resources such as: scholarly articles (journals, papers), books: hardcopy and electronic, theses & dissertations, government & Institutional Reports. Many are accessible in the library and through the library website.

Submission Guidelines

You are required to submit your essay to the respective link on your module Moodle page no later than the 18th of February. Please ensure to attach the completed TUS essay cover sheet to your essay.

You must ensure to back up all your drafts and final documents in various locations e.g., Moodle Turnitin, Drop box, Google Docs, OneDrive or email. This is due unfortunately to possible unforeseen viruses. No extensions will be provided due to loss of content if the work has not been backed up.

You must adhere to the ‘TUS Academic Integrity and Plagiarism Policy’ (available on the TUS website). The similarity index on Turnitin can be checked regularly prior to your submission on Moodle, on the ‘Academic Writing Skills’ Moodle page. You can upload your drafts without the cover sheet, to the Turnitin link here, as many times as you want without it being saved to the repository.

Extensions will not be granted for this essay except in mitigating circumstances. In these circumstances a ‘Dept of Social Sciences – Missed Assessment/Extension to Deadlines’ form, should be submitted at least one week before the submission date. This form/link is available on Moodle under the Dept’s Course Documentation and the link is also available on your Moodle page. Requests for extensions will be reviewed on a case- by-case basis only, and the student will be informed whether their request has been granted within that week. Any other late submissions not permitted extensions, will be considered under the TUS policy and the relevant penalties will be applied.
