Learning Outcomes

In completing the assessment task, students are required to demonstrate their ability to:

1. Analyse and identify risk factors to community, pupil and teacher wellbeing and critically examine and evaluate health determinants and theories that explore the influences and factors that enhance and inhibit individuals and communities to engage in and sustain health-promoting activities in the whole school and community settings through policy, culture and social structure.

2. Synthesise, reflect and describe what is meant by wellbeing and increase personal teacher wellbeing and resilience through developing creative, self-reflective, life-long learning mindsets that demonstrate professional ethic and values outlined by the professional code of conduct for teachers.

3. Critically and creatively select and develop appropriate SPHE and PE content, strategies, resources and assessments that will enhance children’s physical, social, emotional and spiritual wellbeing and enable them to foster healthy relationships, active citizenship and realise their potential in their communities.

4. Synthesise professional knowledge and skills to plan and implement universally inclusive, holistic, engaging and integrated evidence-based wellbeing and health interventions that support the development of health-promoting behaviours and develop physical literacy in all children across the continuum of support.

5. Use digital, literacy, numeracy and research skills to inform independent, critical and reflective professional teachers who create appropriate and inclusive learning environments and enriching learning experiences for all pupils that take account of the potentially complex and ill-defined contexts in which they operate.

Assessment Methodology

This module is assessed by portfolio assessment. On completion of this module, you are required to present a portfolio of artefacts to demonstrate your attainment of the learning outcomes.

Assessment Tasks

Artefact 1 – Academic Poster (1250 words)

“Dance focuses on exploring movement concepts and skills through creative dance, folk dance and other genres. It allows children to express themselves through movement while developing physical coordination. Dance naturally integrates, aligns with and complements teaching in Arts Education.” Wellbeing Specification for Primary and Special Schools (NCCA, 2025, p.49).

Create a 2-page academic poster (size A2) to demonstrate the importance of Dance as a Physical Education strand in supporting a child’s holistic wellbeing.

The poster can be created using PowerPoint presentation tool. You may use a combination of visuals and text in your poster presentation.

The title ‘Let’s Dance!’ must be included on the poster.

The poster should include the following headings:

1. An examination of literature with reference to the above quotation and the role of Dance (Creative and/or Folk) in the Physical Education curriculum (approx. 600 words)  2. An outline of 3 lesson plans for the strand of Dance based on the selected stimulus (approx. 650 words).

Each lesson plan outline must include: 

• A suitable book, story, song or poem for 3^rd class as a stimulus (The title and author of the book/poem/story/song must be provided).
• A warm-up activity
• A summary of the main development activity
• A concluding activity.
• Resources and equipment used in the lesson must be identified in the lesson plan.
• An overall content objective/learning outcome for the three lessons will suffice.
• Each lesson must also include an outline of the FMS to be developed.
• A selection of music must accompany the lessons. Links to the songs/music must be included on the poster.

2. Reference List

Total Word Count: 1,250 words. A 10% +/- word penalty is applied to the 1,250 words (and not to the approx. words per heading). Failure to adhere to the specified word count (+/-10% of the poster word count number) will result in a 10% penalty.

A list of references for Artefact 1 should be included (minimum 5 academic references from various published academic sources). An academic source is any scholarly book, chapter from an edited book, or journal article that is authoritative, peer reviewed and written by an academic expert in the subject field.

Please note that the curriculum documents and Department of Education circulars are not considered academic references. It is advised that you use the Hibernia College library and the library reading list page to source journals and e-books relevant to the topic.

References for any stimulus, resources and music must also be included in the Reference List.

Criteria for success:

Focus: The poster should offer a well-articulated presentation of the topic. All information included on the poster must be relevant to the subject heading.

Organisation: The poster should follow a logical structure, with information grouped under appropriate headings. Each element of the poster must be connected to the other elements.

Development/Support: The poster should relate all sections to the poster title. Each section is appropriately developed, supported by relevant research and resources.

Design: The poster is creative, visually attractive and inviting. All aspects of the poster are readable; the poster is not cluttered, and all visuals and written passages serve a specific purpose.

Reference List: The poster should include references; all initiatives and activities cited from other sources must be included. Curriculum documents may be cited but are not counted as academic references.

Creating the Academic Poster: Type your assignment using a Microsoft Word document (template on MyHelms) under the assignment headings (listed above) including the reference list.

Include the word count on the Word doc. Copy and paste the text into the Academic Poster.

The Academic Poster should be uploaded as a PDF file on MyHelms.

The Word document (with poster text) MUST be uploaded along with your PDF poster assignment on MyHelms.

Upload directions: Submit your Poster (in PDF format) and the accompanying Word document with the poster text on the portfolio template provided and upload and submit to MyHELMS.   Please check whether the portfolio document opens successfully and is uploaded correctly before fully submitting your assignment.

Artefact 2 – Academic Essay (1,250 words)

Assessment Methodology

Students are required to present an academic essay on completion of this section of the module to demonstrate their attainment of the learning outcomes.

Assessment Task – Academic Essay (1,250 words)

SPHE plays a vital role in children’s learning and holistic development by fostering both personal and collective wellbeing. Grounded in the Wellbeing specification’s values, it creates a positive and supportive learning environment where every child is valued as a unique individual with meaningful contributions to make.

Wellbeing Specification for Primary and Special Schools (NCCA, 2025, p. 8)

(A) With respect to the quotation above, critique the content of the Wellbeing Specification for Stage 4 pupils across the three strands of Emotional and Relational Education, Health Education and Community and Belonging.

(B) Drawing on the existing literature and your own professional judgement, discuss the professional learning and support needs of teachers to implement the Wellbeing Specification (NCCA, 2025) effectively for SPHE in classrooms with Stage 4 pupils. In your answer, consider areas such as curriculum organisation, pedagogy, inclusive practice, assessment and whole-school support.

Please adhere to the following when completing this essay: The submission must clearly draw on content and readings from the Module 111 Professional Studies: Health and Wellbeing (SPHE, PE). At least five academic, scholarly or professional sources should be cited in this assignment, and a reference list must be included with your essay. This reference list is not included in the word count.

Penalties There are penalties for:

• Late submission
• Failure to adhere to specified word limits for the academic essay as a whole
• Non submission of an assessment or uploading an incorrect document you will receive a mark of zero and will be required to repeat this assessment.
• This will result in a delay in the issuing of results and may affect your course completion date and graduation.

Important: Where a student has to repeat an assignment, due to non-submission or a fail the module result will be capped at a pass grade overall.
