ASSIGNMENT:

The Climate Action Plan 2021 sets out ambitious targets to reduce the country’s reliance upon carbonintensive fossil fuels while improving energy efficiency. The program requires the public sector to lead the way in achieving the targets. In order to meet the climate action plan targets, most public buildings will have to undergo some form of deep energy retrofit to achieve the 51% emissions reduction by 2030 and be net zero by 2050.

According to the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) Energy Efficiency in Ireland – 2021  report, buildings accounted for 35% of total final energy consumption. Moreover, public sector buildings are estimated to contribute 3,438 GWh of final energy consumption and 889 ktC02.

The aim of this assignment is to evaluate the current regulations governing the renovation of public buildings and determine, with the aid of a case study and appropriate suite of technologies to be utilised to be in building renovation to help meet these ambitions targets.

As part of this assignment you are required to:

 Provide an overview of current Building Regulations governing the deep renovation of public buildings to meet the required emissions reductions by 2030.

 Evaluate the options for renewable energy technology solutions that can be incorporated into buildings located within the urban environment such as the TU Dublin Park House building.

 Develop a case study for TU Dublin Park House building or similar utilising the data provided.

The introduction/conclusion format, layout, indexing, references and length of document (guideline 5000 words) will constitute 10% of the overall mark. The Harvard referencing system or the IEEE referencing system is to be used throughout.

Presentation/Structure of the Document

   
All the main sections of the assignment should be numbered.

Consistent use of capital letters in the headings and captions in the Table of Contents, List of Figures, List of Tables, etc..    
Start each chapter at the top of a new page.    
Avoid excessive use of bullet points.    

Page Numbering

   
The most commonly used format for numbering documents is i, ii, iii, etc. and then in the introduction move on to the number format 1, 2, 3, etc. The Introduction marks the start of the main body of the work so therefore the numbering should restart with the number 1.

Check to see how the Oxford English Dictionary is numbered.

   
There is no need to write the word page beside every page number; when you see a number on the bottom of a page it generally always denotes a page number.    
Any font in the header or footer should be one or two font sizes smaller (generally font 10) than the main body of the text (font 12) so that it stays in the background; good quality text books follow this format.    

Formatting the Assignment

Font type is consistent throughout the document; note also it should be size 12 and 1.5 spacing between lines.    
Is the alignment of your paragraphs consistent e.g. do you use justify or left alignment?    
Assignment is generally free from typing errors    
When using abbreviations you should capitalise the words in the format e.g. Electricity Supply Board (ESB); after this point in your assignment you should just use the abbreviation    
If you have a list of abbreviations, is it in ascending alphabetical order and formatted?    
If you have a list of abbreviations – is it complete?    
Use English spelling as opposed to American spelling.    

Figures, Tables, etc

All tables need to be of a consistent style; retype them if necessary.    
All figures, tables, etc. should be numbered, and have a caption.

Note: It is generally better to use the format Fig. 2.1 for figures, tables, etc. That is the figure numbers should follow the chapter number.

   
All figures, tables, etc. that you did not produce yourself should be referenced as to their source using the Harvard or IEEE referencing system    
In a formal report you should have a cross-reference to all figures, tables, etc. in the main body of the text e.g. Fig. 2.1 indicates that …; also this should come before the figure in question.    
The same size gap should be left before and after every figure, table, section, etc.    

Referencing

N.B.: if you referencing is not correct you could fail the assignment    
In-text citations should be used where you have drawn information from another source    
In the Harvard referencing system you should use the format: (Murphy, 2015) for in-text citations; if you are referring to an author in the text you use the format: Murphy (2013). In the IEEE system you use numbers.

For double references, you should use the format (Murphy. 2015; McIntyre, 2018) or in the

IEEE you use the format [7; 13].

   
When quoting directly from a document you need to give the page number. In the Harvard reference system is generally follows the format: (Murphy, 2015: 15) and in the IEEE it follows the format [24: p. 18]. Also you should use commas e.g. ‘direct quote’ to indicate what sections are taken from source material.    
Your list of references should follow the format in the learning support guide.    
Include your citation inside the full stop of a sentence and not outside it.
