Guidelines

Candidates are required to complete two assignments where they will investigate ALL of the following systems:

Criteria

Important Note: In completing the each of the assignments for this module, please be aware that due to the factual information you are required to present on each of the body systems, caution must be exercised, and you must avoid the following practice:

1. Taking information directly from source i.e. coping and pasting information from internet sites or rewriting the information directly from books / websites etc. — this is plagiarism and penalties will apply as per college policy.
2. If you do take information / sections of text directly from source as above irrespective of a reference, this again is not best practice as you lack illustrating your own understanding and penalties will apply as per college policy.

You are therefore advised to:  

1. Paraphrase information you have obtained from other sources and reference appropriately in body of work as per instructions outlined in the Harvard Referencing.
2. The information presented in your assignments must illustrate and demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the specific body systems, thus assignments must be written in your own words.

TO ENSURE THAT THE CORRECT REFERENCING FORMAT IS APPLIED LEARNERS SHOULD REFER TO THE ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES ON REFERENCING DOC.

PENALTIES WILL BE APPLICABLE (REF MOST UP TO DATE VERSION OF THE PLAGIARISIM POLICY) TO THOSE ASSESSMENTS THAT DO NOT CONSIDER THESE REFERENCING GUIDELINES.

Assignment One: (30 Marks)

• The Circulatory System
• The Respiratory System

Assessment Technique: Assignment One
Weighting: 30%
Title: Investigate the Circulatory and Respiratory System

Structure & Guidelines for Assignment One

Introduction: In this section provide an overview of what is to be discussed in Assignment (1) and sources used.                                                             

The Circulatory System:  In this section address the following:

• Blood – components and functions
• The heart – structure and functions
• Structure of arteries, veins and capillaries
• Double circulation system
• The cardiac cycle
• Diseases (discuss a minimum of two diseases that can occur in the system)

Support the above system with diagrams – {hand drawn and labelled correctly}.   If you use a software programme to create your diagram or use a blank template from the internet you must reference the programme / internet source clearly in your work.

The Respiratory System: In this section address the following:            

• Functions of the respiratory system
• Structure of the organs of the respiratory system
• Internal and external respiration
• Role of the intercostal muscles and diaphragm
• Diseases (discuss a minimum of two diseases that can occur in the system)

Support the above system with diagrams – {hand drawn and labelled correctly}.   If you use a software programme to create your diagram or use a blank template from the internet you must reference the programme / internet source clearly in your work.

Include in your assignment relevant in text references and support your assignment with a Bibliography.

Assignment Two: (30 Marks)

• The Skeletal and Muscular System
• The Digestive System

Assessment Technique: Assignment Two
Weighting: 30%
Title: Investigate the Skeletal and Muscular system and the Digestive System

Structure & Guidelines for Assignment Two

Introduction: In this section provide an overview of what is to be discussed in Assignment (2) and sources used.                                                             

The Skeletal and Muscular System: In this section address the following:

• Structure and functions of the skeletal system
• Main bones of the appendicular axial skeleton
• Composition of bone
• Structure of a typical long bone supported with diagram.
• Main joints of the body
• Overview of the main muscles of the body
• Structure and Functions of the muscular system
• Diseases {discuss a minimum of one disease for each of the above systems}

Support the above system with diagrams – {hand drawn and labelled correctly}.   If you use a software programme to create your diagram or use a blank template from the internet you must reference the programme / internet source clearly in your work.

The Digestive System: In this section address the following:              

• Structure and functions of the digestive system, to include main organs and accessory organs
• The stages of digestion
• Overview of nutrients and chemistry of digestion
• Diseases (discuss a minimum of two diseases that can occur in the system)

Support the above system with diagrams – {hand drawn and labelled correctly}.   If you use a software programme to create your diagram or use a blank template from the internet you must reference the programme / internet source clearly in your work.

Include in your assignment relevant in text references and support your assignment with a Bibliography

Important Information 

Word Count:  per assignment: 2500-3000 Words +/- 10%

Please note: if you do go over your word count deduction will be at tutor discretion, based on the relevance of the information submitted.

In the completion of this assignment / project you may gather your material from a variety of resources which may include the following:

For final presentation of your work please ensure:
