Working from a case study scenario supplied by the assessor (a new scenario is set each year), learners examine the supports and educational options available to a child with special educational needs in Irish schools, identify sources of stress in the SNA workplace, and produce a detailed plan for meeting the child’s primary care needs and a secondary associated task, finishing with a critical reflection on their own learning.

Most learners on the 6N1957 case study lose marks in the 15-mark care plan, because they describe what an SNA does in general rather than planning for the child in their scenario. The plan should name the two primary care needs and the secondary task, then set out each step, the skills used, how dignity and independence are protected and which health and safety practices apply. The 5-mark sections need at least two supports and two placement options, and the reflection must be critical, not a summary.
