Death and Burial in Ireland – The Documentary Sources.

Part 1 – Census of Death 1851

The key aim of this section is to investigate the causes of mortality in selected areas between 1841-1851. Please use tables/graphs etc to summarise data and present patterns.

1. Table 1 presents a summary of all deaths by age (%) in selected areas in 1851. How does Cork City compare to

(a) Limerick City and Dublin City

(b) Cork County

(c) Munster and

(d) Ireland? Suggest reasons for same.

2. Using the table ‘Returns of Death by Disease, Sexes, Localities and Years 1841-1851’ for the City of Cork on pages 992-993 identify the key causes of mortality and evaluate the extent to which cause of death was impacted by gender.

The aim of this section is to explore and evaluate the nature of the evidence contained with St Finbarr’s burial register. What can the register tell us about life and death in the city in the second half of the nineteenth century? This should be investigated under the following themes. (Tables and histograms, along with descriptive and critical analysis should be provided)

1. Burial rate – how did this vary according to

(a) year, season, month

(b) gender

(c) age

(d) religion

(e) place of residence.

2. Cause of death – how did this vary according to

(a) year, season, month

(b) gender

(c) age

(d) religion

(e) place of residence.
