QQI Level 5 – 5N0690 Communications Assignment: Portfolio Project on Writing & Technology Skills

Collection of Work Brief – 50%

Learners are required to develop a portfolio relating to their communication skills. The collection of work must clearly demonstrate evidence of originality and own work. The collection of work will be submitted no later than three weeks after the completion of the module. The collection of work will include:

Writing Skills: Evidence should include a range of relevant documents, including a vocational
structured report, 3 documents and communication technology skills.

1) Vocational Structured Report:

A 1000-word structured report will be created to demonstrate the learner’s proficiency in report writing. The topic of the report may be the learner’s vocational area, or a topic related to it e.g. role of healthcare assistant, customer service, business, etc. using information gathered from a variety of sources.

2) 3 Documents:

▪ Formal – 2 documents written for purpose e.g. CV, cover letter, memo, agenda, minutes,
other.
▪ Informal – 1 piece of personal writing e.g. thankyou/congratulations/condolence/poem,
other.
Evidence of drafting, re-drafting and editing should be attached to at least one of the finished
pieces.
At least one of your drafts should be handwritten.
The final documents should be typed up where appropriate.
Guidelines for the topic of each piece will be provided by the instructor.

3) Communication Technology Skills:

▪ The learners must demonstrate their ability to understand and use technology:
▪ Send and receive an email
▪ Print copy of email
▪ Download and print a page from the Internet (relating to healthcare)
▪ A 500-word report will be created by the learner detailing the advantages and
disadvantages of communication technology in response to a group discussion.

The learning outcomes assessed are as follows:
LO1, LO2, LO6, LO7, LO8, LO9.

Marking Criteria

Writing Skills:
Structured Report (Total 25 marks)
▪ Report well structured, detailed, balanced, uses impersonal language, good interpretation of
terms of reference, submitted on time
▪ Research is comprehensive, relevant, variety of sources, acknowledged through references
and bibliography
▪ Key issues discussed and explained with clarity, objectivity, evidence of original thinking
▪ Findings presented clearly and in own words, recommendations/conclusions show evidence
of critical thinking and analysis
▪ Fluent writing, well expressed, extensive vocabulary, freedom from minor errors in spelling,
grammar and punctuation

Documents (Total 15 marks)

Correct layout used, accurate, succinct, well expressed and presented, with legible handwriting in a minimum of one document Demanding situations requiring awareness of suitable tone dealt with effectively Action/follow up requested if appropriate Excellent spelling, punctuation and paragraphing Evidence of careful drafting and re-drafting

Communication Technology (Total 10 marks)

▪ Wide range of technology used successfully and with confidence
▪ Extensive summary of aspects of communications technology, with clear understanding
of impact on both private and public life

PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism will not be tolerated by The Cpl Institute. If an examiner suspects that
plagiarism has occurred, you will be informed of their concern. The Cpl Institute Training
Manager will also be informed. All suspected instances of plagiarism will be investigated
fully. Should an assignment/project be suspected of plagiarism, it will be returned to you. If you wish you can have your work reviewed by another member of staff. If plagiarism is confirmed, you willbe requested to resubmit a new assignment/project and it will be recorded  on your file. You will be kept informed throughout the whole process.

AUTHORSHIP

All assignments must be your own work and that use of material from other sources must be
properly and fully acknowledged in the coursework submission through references. The
submitted work must be created exclusively by you. You must not copy part or all of someone
else’s work and submit it as your own.
