POL1022 / LG139 Assignment
Final Essay (worth 50% of final grade)
Deadline: 27 April 2026 – h 23.59
Word limit: 2,000 words (including in-text citations but excluding bibliography)
Choose a country of your choice (excluding Ireland) and critically explore its approach to climate governance.
The prompts below bring together various aspects we have discussed in class and are intended to guide your thinking of your country’s approach to and politics surrounding climate change. You are NOT required to address all of them. You should focus on at least ONE prompt, and may choose to address two or more if you wish.
- Global climate governance: How does or did your country engage in international climate politics, including participation in UN climate negotiations (COPs)?
- National climate governance and politics: What are the country’s domestic climate policies, political institutions, and internal political dynamics?
- Climate movements and public engagement: Have climate protests or grassroots movements taken place in the country? What role do they play in shaping climate policy and public debate?
- Media and public opinion: How has climate change been framed in the media and political discourse? What is the level of climate scepticism or denial, and how does this influence policy and public engagement?
In addition to these prompts, you are welcome to include other considerations from the module that are relevant to the national context you have chosen, i.e. corporate responsibility, the interaction between climate change and ecosystem protection, as well as energy policy.
Guidelines
- Base your essay on insights and materials from the module, including lecture slides, readings, and recommended resources
- You are encouraged to go beyond class materials by incorporating additional resources, especially peer-reviewed academic work (e.g., journal articles or book chapters), but also newspaper articles, reports, blogs, or policy analyses
- Use in-text citations to support your arguments (referencing style: Harvard)
- You are encouraged to provide a critical evaluation rather than a purely descriptive account
- Late submissions will incur a penalty of 1% per working day (or part thereof). Standard rules regarding plagiarism and academic integrity apply
