Instructions to students:
Please read Mark Boyle, (2015) & (2021) Human Geography: A Concise Introduction (Wiley- Blackwell) Chapter 4 An Unequal but changing World: Geographies of the World Capitalist Economy. In addition to this reading, it is also ESSENTIAL that you explore and use data from the website of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Human Development Reports https://hdr.undp.org in your study guide focus questions.
The Human Development Index in Excel file format will be provided on Loop.
Study guide focus questions:
- List and briefly explain the three key measures that are used in calculating the HDI score for each country. (100 words)
- Describe the main patterns that emerge from the map overleaf showing the HDI (2016). (150 words)
- From the list of countries detailed overleaf on page 2 that have experienced improvements in their HDI score between 1990 – or later dates depending on availability of data – and 2022, select TWO, ONE of which should be from Africa and respond to the following.
- Detail how the HDI score (expressed out of 1) of each country has changed over time.
- Explain how these improvements were achieved by EACH country using specific detail and data in support of your answer.
- How has the HDI of EACH country changed between 2019 and 2022? Account for these changes. (750 words for Question 3 in entirety)
