Assessment : Group Project and Academic Essay
This assessment supports you to achieve the following module learning outcomes:
- Interpret and apply knowledge of safety legislation as it relates to healthcare and nursing
- Describe and summarise the function of risk assessments and safety management processes in a healthcare environment
- Demonstrate knowledge and competencies in infection prevention and control and waste management standards applied to healthcare
- Interpret the principles of safety to key nursing interventions and apply these within the simulated environment
Aim
The aim of this assessment is to facilitate the preparation and presentation of a project as part of a small team. The project will help you to demonstrate your understanding of a key concept supporting safety in nursing care. This assessment also supports the development of teamwork and communication skills.
Assessment Guidelines
This group assessment has two parts — an academic essay and an oral presentation. Groups will consist of no more than four or five students.
Part A Oral Presentation (40% of overall marks)
You will formally present the content of the project as a group. This presentation should demonstrate input from all members of the group and should be supported by a PowerPoint presentation. This will allow you to share the knowledge you gained during the development of the project with your peers.
The PowerPoint presentation should have no more than eight slides — one additional title slide and a reference slide are permitted. You are encouraged to use supporting imagery.
You must upload the PowerPoint presentation (in pdf format) to the assessment submission portal along with the written project.
Academic Essay Guidelines (60%)
The academic essay must be presented using an academic writing format and it should include the following:
- An introduction, with an outline of the topic
- A main body, with evidence base/supporting research for chosen topic, techniques to ensure safety in care, and application to nursing practice
- A conclusion, providing a summary with recommendations for how nursing students may apply this knowledge during their clinical placements
