NUR1102 (NS458) Research Inquiry – Prof Kate Irving
NS458 2024-2025 Research Inquiry Assessment Guidelines
Part 1 – Written Report (100%)
The purpose of this report is to allow you to demonstrate your ability to actively engage with the best available evidence related to a specific area of clinical practice. It should be relevant to your branch of nursing. You will undertake and report on a critical review of the literature using the template I have provided. Further guidance on completion will be given in class.
This is a group activity; in the real world we rarely ever work alone as researchers. Part of what you are demonstrating is your ability to work in a group and some marks are given for this part too.
The report asks you to document a minimum of 5 group processes. Please read the Group work information on Loop as it will help you navigate this project successfully.
Guidance on assignment
In the first week of academic block, you will allocate yourselves to a group of 4 (within your own pathway). This will be done on loop by 5pm Friday 10th October. Once a name is entered it cannot be entered again so nobody can join 2 groups.
If any group member has certified sick leave send the certificate to me and note the name and date the certificate was emailed to me. The group will not be penalised if one section of the review is missing in the case of certified leave.
I will work systematically through the stages of the report in class over the next 5 weeks. If you work on your report alongside the stages in the class, there will be no big race at the end, and you will find the workload manageable. This is not really a project that can be left until the last 3 weeks of semester.
Use the template to record your project work and group work. Do not make a different one as you will not get extra marks, and it is a waste of time.
All 4 students need to sign the group contract, and the final group allocated marks. 20% of your mark will be allocated by yourselves as a group. Any student with 0% from the group will not get a mark in the overall assignment as this mark means they have taken no part in the group. The group must discuss each person’s contribution to the group and the overall report and allocate what they think is a fair mark for this. If one group gives 19 or 20% to everyone and hands in a poor essay, I will not use that mark, and the mark will just be made from my own assessment. Be realistic in terms of the mark you think each person deserves using the rubric. The marks will be signed electronically and the document changed into PDF before being handed in by a group member.
Written Assignment Marking rubric (100%)
1. | Demonstrate a spirit of inquiry /Formulates a clinical question – Presents a searchable, answerable question. Clearly articulates each element, identifying population of interest (P), issue or intervention of focus (I), the context of interest or comparison (C) the anticipated/desired outcome (O), and time (T) if relevant. | 15%
2. | Search for and collect the most relevant best evidence. Provides details / a table with specifics of search strategy (e.g. databases/sources, keywords (or variables), limiters, difficulties encountered). Details should enable the search to be replicated. Include detail on the quality of evidence amassed based on a hierarchy of evidence table. Include your literature Matrix table as an appendix. | 20%
3. | Critically appraise the evidence– Provides analysis and synthesis of key pieces of evidence. Interrogates the contribution of the evidence to answer the initial question raised. Key points/themes are presented in a logical fashion. Include your synthesis worksheet as an appendix. | 30%
