PSY1062 / PSYC507 Continuous Assessment 1
Development of Measurement Scale
[Word limit 3,000 words; Weighting: 50%]
Task Objective
To develop a practical understanding of scale development and testing of psychometric properties.
Task Description
As a class, you are required to develop a reliable and valid measure of attitudes on a topic of your choice. You will be given the opportunity to discuss and then vote on potential topics in your practical class.
You will need to decide on a list of items that will form the measure you choose, and decide on how they should be scored. Detailed guidelines will be made available in your practical sessions.
Once the measure has been formed, each student will be required to collect data from 10 participants and enter the scores into a database. Once all the data has been collected, you must evaluate the measure’s psychometric properties, including reliability and validity.
Two hours per week will be allocated to class work, and you are required to attend the class to participate.
Each student will write a practical report of the development of the measure. This report should include a description of the relevant literature and background to the development of the measure, as well as the steps involved in that process. You should report the psychometric properties of the measure and discuss these in relation to its overall quality and potential usefulness.
Specifically, your report should follow the standard format, as follows:
- Title
- Abstract
- Introduction
- Method
- Results
- Discussion
- References
- Appendices
While the report deals primarily with the process of developing the measure, you should also show evidence of background reading on the topic. You will be directed to relevant references during the semester, as well as receiving instruction and support in writing your report.
