Learning Outcomes:

In completing this assessment task, you should demonstrate your ability to:

  • Examine and critically evaluate the use of the central methodologies of the curriculum in the context of designing different strategies for developing effective social and environmental education and Global Citizenship Education (GCE) across the range of classes in the primary school.
  • Critically examine and reflect on effective pedagogical strategies including the use of innovative practice, outdoor learning and digital technologies that enhance children’s learning in social and environmental education and GCE.
  • Demonstrate the skills, competencies and knowledge needed to design, teach and assess imaginative and engaging learning activities that will enhance children’s learning of social and environmental education and GCE topics, and that will provide children with opportunities to interact with local communities, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and other relevant groups; these promote awareness of social and environmental education and GCE and foster opportunities for children to become aware of their position as global citizens in their local community.
  • Critically analyse the role of assessment in the teaching and learning process of social and environmental education and GCE, including assessment strategies that empower children to become active agents in their own learning.
  • Reflect critically on the integrated nature of learning across the subjects in this module and across the wider curriculum to plan and implement creative and enriching thematic learning experiences that will support children’s awareness, appreciation and understanding of the world through learning about the rich diversity of peoples, their experiences, cultures, beliefs and environments in different times, places and circumstances.

This module is assessed by portfolio assessment.  On completion of this module, you are required to present a portfolio of artefacts to demonstrate your attainment of the learning outcomes.

Submission Date: Wednesday, 18 February 2026, 3 p.m.

Task 1 (20%) Integrated Thematic plan

Examine the SDG 14 Life below Water 14-life-below-water and design an Integrated Thematic Plan to support the teaching of any topic related to that goal to fifth or sixth class.

Use the template provided to outline an overview of one lesson in each of the following areas, History and Geography. You should also provide an overview for one lesson each, in any two of the Arts subjects, Visual Art, Music and Drama. (4 lessons in total).

All four lessons must link meaningfully to the theme, and the lessons should facilitate progression in learning about the topic and deepen understanding of the aim of the SGD 14 Life below Water

Task 2 (30%) Lesson Plan 

Design a full lesson plan for the History or Geography lesson outlined in the Integrated Thematic Plan. Use the template provided.

The lesson must include a clear reference to SDG 14 and it should motivate and empower the children to become informed, responsible and active citizens.

The lesson should adopt an enquiry-based approach with active collaborative learning activities, but it must also outline explicit teaching.

Task 3 (20%) Teaching resource or a Teacher designed Activity

Design or curate a teaching resource or a teacher designed task, that will be used to support teaching and enhance learning during the lesson. Any medium may be used, and this task can be uploaded separately if necessary. The resource or the teacher designed task must be clearly used in the lesson plan.

If a YouTube, or third-party video/ resource is used you must provide a 400-word rationale outlining why the video/resource was chosen and how it will be used. A word count penalty of + or – 10% will be applied to the rationale only.

Word Count: There is no word count for these tasks, but it is expected that the integrated thematic plan and the lesson plan will be approximately 500-700 words each (not including the template text). The teaching resource to support teaching should be approximately 400 words.

Task 4 (30%) Reflection

Write an 800-word reflection outlining the personal learning you have achieved during the creation of this portfolio. Discuss the merits and potential challenges of adopting an integrated thematic approach to teaching about the Sustainable Development Goal Life below water. You may refer to both the 1999 and the 2025 curricula in your discussion.

In the completion of this task refer to your portfolio, and at least three academic and professional sources to support the discussion. Curriculum documents are NOT counted as academic references.

Penalties

There are penalties for:

  • Late submission: A 10% penalty will be applied to the overall grade.
  • Failure to Meet Word Count Requirements on the following:

Reflection 800 words – a word count of less than 720 and greater than 880 will incur a 10% penalty for this component of the assessment

  • Incorrect Document Upload: If a student uploads the wrong document or an inaccessible file, a zero mark will be applied for that section, and the student may be required to repeat this assessment.
  • Non-submission will receive a mark of zero and the student will be required to repeat this assessment.
  • This will result in a delay in the issuing of results and may affect your course completion date and graduation.

Important: Where a student has to repeat an assignment due to non-submission or a failure, the module result will be capped at a pass grade overall.
