NURS107 Assessment
Academic Poster Presentation and Supporting Document CA1
This assessment supports you to achieve the following module learning outcomes:
- Articulate and utilise the normal human ageing process as a baseline for patient assessment
- Analyse and apply the principles of caring for the older adult in a variety of care settings
- Describe and summarise the specific care needs of patients with dementia syndromes
Aim
The aim of this assessment is to develop the necessary skills in preparing and presenting a poster and supporting it with evidence-based research.
Assessment Guidelines
This assessment is divided into two parts — Part A and Part B.
Part A supports the creation of an academic poster and supporting written evidence for the content of the poster.
Part B refers to the oral presentation of the poster at a class seminar which facilitates peer learning and includes a question-and-answer session.
Part A: Academic Poster and Supporting Evidence (80% of overall marks)
Academic Poster
Select an initiative or element of care that demonstrates an improvement or potential improvement of quality of life or a patient outcome for a person in the older adult age group. Create a poster to showcase this initiative. This may include a quality improvement project that you have seen during your clinical practice or a campaign that has been launched recently in Ireland.
Analyse the impact of this initiative/element of care, drawing from research to outline the role of the nurse in the delivery of this care. Images are encouraged in your poster design.
Note: You will be provided with a template for this poster from our Learning Design team. You are strongly advised to attend the workshops on poster creation and presentation skills.
You should discuss and agree your choice of topic with the module lead. The poster will be presented in class as part of the assessment.
Suggested topics
- Nursing assessment tools used in the care of older people — focus on the contribution of one tool for quality nursing care
- Nursing care for patients with dementia syndromes — focus on one aspect of excellence in care, for example, the role of the environment or communication triggers or memory triggers
- Nursing care for an older person with poor nutrition and unintentional weight loss — focus on appropriate nursing care to ensure adequate nutrition and hydration
- Any other topic of your choice that focuses on nursing care of the older person. This option must be discussed and agreed with the module lead in advance of commencing work.
An essential element of this poster is to demonstrate the evidence base for nursing assessment or care. You should draw on relevant, best-available research to inform your arguments in this evidence-based poster and ensure these are correctly referenced.
In your conclusion section, you should include your recommendations for continuing quality nursing care in the care of older person speciality.
Supporting Evidence
This section should complement and support the information contained in your poster.

Include the overall aim of the assessment, as well as a brief introduction to the major aims of your chosen topic.
Body of summary
Draw on relevant, best-available research to inform your arguments in the evidence-based discussion.
Conclusion
Summarise your findings and concluding remarks, including recommendations for continuing quality nursing care in the care of the older person speciality.
