NU3053 Assignment
CBT
Three people have been referred by their GPs to the mental health services. Each individual is referred to a CBT group for obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Michelle is a single 25-year-old actuary. She has become very anxious about the possibility of her house going on fire. She worries that she will be responsible for it happening, so she feels she must regularly check all the kitchen appliances. She has lost a lot of sleep due to feeling compelled to get up in the middle of the night to check on appliances. She exhibits hostility towards the facilitator and feels she “doesn’t need talking therapy”.
Greta is a 32-year-old married librarian. She is very worried about her pregnancy. She had a miscarriage last year and since becoming pregnant again she feels like she has to pray to ensure nothing will happen. She worries about her next scan and feels that praying and counting in even numbers will help prevent her most feared outcome. During the group, Greta frequently interrupts and asks the other group members for reassurance.
Barry is a 40-year-old musician (guitarist), and plays in a wedding band. He often travels around the country with work. He is married with three children (ages 12, 9, and 6). Barry has intrusive thoughts about harm coming to his family, and is constantly upgrading the security features on his house. At home, he has a “routine” flicking light switches to “protect my family”. When he is working, he is often distracted, checking in on the security app and making several phone calls to his wife to ensure everyone in the house is safe. He is clearly frustrated by tensions within the group but tries his best to contribute.
Critically discuss the role of the facilitator (mental health nurse) in inspiring hope for this group. In your answer, consider the nature, function, and purpose of the group. Also consider the developmental stages of groups, group dynamics, and facilitation skills.
