Data Visualisation Assignment: Storytelling & Interactive CV using Tableau Public

Objective

This assignment has two components.

part A

You will be telling a data driven story. Specifically, you are required to re-tell an existing article or blog post, ideally from a new perspective or with a new interpretation. Using Tableau Public you will piece together existing statistics, data visualisations, and/or figures, optionally supplemented by additional results you think would help you tell your story. The focus of the data story can be about any topic of your choosing, but you must be able to support your narrative with real data visualisations. In addition, your story should be focused on answering a specific question.

For part B, you will create an interactive visual CV for yourself.

Marks Awarded

The marks awarded for this assignment are worth 25% of the overall marks for the course. There are no facilities or opportunities to re-submit the assignment before the next offering of the module, should student(s) fail to submit by specified deadlines in the first instance, or find that students are sitting the written examination at Autumn. Marks for continuous assessment (including zero marks for non-submission) will be carried forward to Autumn.

What to Submit for Part A

1. Tell your story (15 marks)

Create a video (up to 5 minutes) telling your story. Use Tableau Public to display your visual data. Create a video where you are narrating your data story. You must be visible in the video and you must be narrating (not an AI generated narration). The precise format is up to you, but you should include both visual representations of data (broadly construed) and a spoken narrative (broadly construed).

Upload the video to YouTube either as public or private video. If you make your video private, please ensure you share it with me and Ribhu Misra, who will assist me with the grading. Instructions on how to do that can be found here https://tinyurl.com/mrxy9afa

If we cannot access the video, it won’t be graded!

2. Reflections (5 marks)

Write one page (single-spaced, size 12 font, .docx file) reflecting on the assignment by briefly answering the following questions:

• What was the question you aimed to answer?
• What went well for you? Which parts did you find easy? Which parts of your story are you most happy with?
• What did you have trouble with? What was the hardest part of telling a story? Which parts of your story are you least happy with?
• What sort of feedback would be most helpful to you? For example, what insights from others could most help you improve your story? Or were there particular aspects of the storytelling process that you could use help with? What would help make you a better data storyteller?

Part B (5 marks)

Using Tableau Public, create a visual interactive CV for yourself, similar in style to the examples here https://www.tableau.com/interactive-resume-gallery

In your submission, please include your existing CV on Word, and then a link to the visual CV you have created on Tableau Public.
