When you purchase a medicinal product it is referred to as a finished medicinal product that was manufactured at a pharmaceutical facility and it contains Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) and in-active ingredients which have gone through all stages of production.

There are various terms related to medicinal products and the different ways they are administered which is stated below:

Drug Substance:

A drug substance is an active ingredient that is intended to treat, cure, prevent or diagnose a disease or affect the structure or function of the body metabolically.

Drug Product:

A drug product is the finished dosage form like a tablet or capsule for example that contains a drug substance and is in association with inactive ingredients.

A finished product is known as a medicinal product that has gone through all stages of production including its packaging and final container.

Enteral:

The desired effect is systemic which means nonlocal and the substance is giving via the digestive tract by swallowing a tablet, gastric tube & rectal suppository.

Parenteral:

The desired effect is also systemic and the substance is giving by other routes than the digestive tract, for example using inhalers, injections & subcutaneous injections.

Topical:

The effect is local and the substance is applied directly to where the action is desired, for example, antibiotic eye drops, ear drops & bug bite relief.

Transdermal Patch:

The desired effect is systemic and local and it’s a medicated adhesive patch that is applied to the skin to deliver a dose of medication through the skin and into the bloodstream, for example, a nicotine patch.
