Assessment C Essay: The Impact of National and International Policy on Childcare Practice & Service Delivery

Module Aims and Objectives

The module focuses on contemporary issues which are reflected in the development of national and international policy and explores the impact of these issues on practice in settings providing services for children.

The module aims to enable students to:

• Develop critical awareness of the themes, debates and factors which shape the national and international political and social landscape for policy development.
• Understand how policy impacts practice in early learning and core settings and settings providing services for school-age children.
• Explore their professional identity and reflect on the impact of their professional knowledge, values and competencies on provision and practice in their setting.
• Develop an awareness of the complexity of the concept of quality with regard to evaluation of practice and provision.
• Identify key trends for future development of the sector.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the module students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate a critical awareness of current themes and debates in the sector which impact on development and evaluation of national policy.
2. Analyze and constructively critique social policy related to the development of the sector in national and international contexts drawing on rationales for provision of services for children.
3. Explain how policy changes impact on delivery and evaluation of services for children.
4. Select and examine a specific theme and explain how it is situated in historical, political and social landscape.
5. Critically reflect on knowledge, skills and learning developed in collaboration with peer learners.

Assessment C – Essay

Weighting – 60% of your module mark.

Learning Outcomes that need to be addressed:

• LO1: Demonstrate a critical awareness of current themes and debates in the sector which impact on development and evaluation of national policy.
• LO2: Analyze and constructively critique social policy related to the development of the sector in national and international contexts drawing on rationale for provision of services for children.
• LO3: Explain how policy changes impact on delivery and evaluation of services for children.

• You need to choose a topic that you did not cover in the presentation.
• Your arguments must be informed by reading and written in debate style.
• Links to be made to practice where applicable.
• Other debates and themes relating to the one you have chosen can be brought into your paper where applicable.
