Abstract

The aim of my study is to assess Dublin’s adoption of mobile banking. I, therefore, intend to collect data from 100 respondents from an online survey. Participants were questioned about their use of mobile banking, their worries, and preferences, as well as their demographic data. The findings indicated that the primary obstacles to the uptake of mobile banking in Dublin were security worries, a lack of faith in technology, and a preference for conventional banking procedures. The use of mobile banking was also shown to be significantly influenced by age, income, and education level. Based on these data, it is advised that banks in Dublin concentrate on fixing security issues, fostering technology trust, and offering mobile banking education to improve client uptake. Overall, this study highlights the need for banks to understand the barriers to mobile banking adoption and take steps to overcome them.

Introduction:

Numerous digital services have emerged because of the quick development of technology, with the goal of revolutionizing the way we go about our everyday lives. Mobile banking is one such invention that has gained popularity all over the world. Mobile banking is the use of portable electronics like smartphones and tablets to access and manage financial services (Shaikh and Karjaluoto, 2015). Mobile banking has been a vital instrument for carrying out financial transactions during the past few years, allowing customers to access numerous banking services right at their fingertips (Batiz-Lazo and Woldesenbet, 2016).

The banking sector has seen a substantial transformation toward digitization in recent years, with many banks making large investments in technology to provide digital services to their clients. With more people utilizing their smartphones to conduct a variety of financial activities, mobile banking has grown in popularity (Chong et al., 2013; Duan et al., 2008; Karjaluoto et al., 2002). Nevertheless, there are still obstacles to the widespread use of mobile banking, particularly in areas like Dublin. The adoption of mobile banking is influenced by several issues, including security concerns, faith in technology, and a preference for traditional banking techniques, according to an earlier study (Chong et al., 2013; Duan et al., 2008; Karjaluoto et al., 2002). However, there is very little research on the adoption of mobile banking in Dublin. To help banks, enhance client acceptance of mobile banking, this study will examine the obstacles to adoption in Dublin and offer advice.

In addition, it has been discovered that demographic factors including age, gender, income, and education affect the adoption process (Chitungo and Munongo, 2013; Alalwan et al., 2017). However, there is little research that focuses directly on the barriers to Dublin’s adoption of mobile banking, the main subject of this thesis. Security issues, such as the worry of fraud and identity theft, were significant hurdles to the adoption of mobile banking (Sathye, 1999). The significance of trust in the financial institution and the supplier of mobile banking services has been underlined in several research. (Chen and Barnes, 2007) found that the adoption of mobile banking was significantly influenced by bank trust. Similarly, to this, research by (Zhou et al., 2010) discovered that the perceived utility and simplicity of the mobile banking service, as well as confidence in the mobile banking service provider, were critical elements in influencing mobile banking adoption. The introduction of mobile banking in Indonesia was significantly impacted by cultural elements including individuality and collectivism (Kurnia et al., 2010). In South Korea, cultural considerations including the value of in-person contacts prevented the widespread use of mobile banking (Lee and Kwon, 2011).

In general, previous research has found several variables that might affect the uptake of mobile banking, and these variables may change depending on the cultural and social environment in which the mobile banking service is being offered.

Despite the rising popularity of mobile banking, Dublin’s adoption rates are still relatively low when compared to those of other major cities throughout the world. It is essential to comprehend the variables that cause this delay since doing so may enable banks and other financial institutions to expand and enhance their mobile banking services, boosting adoption rates and overall consumer satisfaction. The goal of this thesis is to analyze the variables preventing mobile banking from becoming widely used by the public in Dublin.

To help banks enhance client acceptance of mobile banking, this study will examine the obstacles to adoption in Dublin and offer advice. By focusing on the elements that contribute to Dublin’s sluggish adoption of mobile banking services, this study advances the body of knowledge in the field. Although the broad elements that influence the adoption of mobile banking have been found in earlier research, it is necessary to look at the characteristics that are particular to Dublin and the Irish market. Additionally, this study intends to offer banks advice that is specific to the Irish market that they may use to promote the usage of mobile banking services. The main aim of this research is to assess the main reasons behind Dublin’s low percentage of mobile banking usage and evaluate Dublin’s present mobile banking services for effectiveness and to look for ways to improve them in terms of usability, security, and customer support. 

100 respondents were surveyed for this study to get information on their adoption of mobile banking, their concerns, and preferences, as well as some demographic data. To evaluate the primary obstacles to mobile banking adoption in Dublin and how demographic characteristics impact adoption, this study examines the data that was gathered.

The literature review second portion will give a thorough study of the barriers related to using mobile banking. This section will outline potential barriers to mobile banking, drawing on current studies in the area, which will help frame the study’s assumptions and research questions. The main goal of this study is to identify the distinctive qualities of the Irish mobile banking sector.
