Subject DT110/2 DT104/3: Architecture and Urban Society

Project Requirement

Creative and constructive regeneration strategies are needed to recapture the urban identity of city streetscapes with high proportions of dilapidated and vacant or underutilized buildings in Ireland.

Prepare a Historic Urban Landscape Study on an urban street of your choice, in any city in Ireland to identify its ‘Urban Heritage Values’. The chosen street must be urban in nature and incorporate a number of architectural heritage buildings (Pre 1930). If the street is very long, a section of the street with a minimum of 26 buildings over two sides may be selected

Prepare a formal report, incorporating the Three Stages detailed below, to present your findings.

Stage 1:

Undertake assessment of academic references and online sources to establish the origins and evolution of the street.

Stage 1: Research the evolution of the street’s development:

  • When was the street scape first developed? What was the land used as before?
  • Which landowners were involved in the initial layout and development of the
street? What other lands did they own and develop?
  • Trace the above analysis via morphological analysis from Medieval to contemporary period using heritage and contemporary maps: Speed 1610; Dineley 1681; deGomme 1673; Brooking 1728; Rocque 1756; OS 1847; OS 2019.
  • Source old photos of the street (Online or the Architectural Archive)
Note: Source the above research using the Harvard Method (ref. TUD Academic Style Guide).

Stage 2:

Land Use, Condition and Photographic Street Survey

  • Carry out a land use and condition survey (building by building) of the ground,
basement & upper floors of the buildings on the street using the land use categories provided at the end of this brief. Template attached. This should be included as one of your appendix and can be referred to within the report.
  • Analyse the data findings from the land use survey and present the information in graphical form (e.g. pie chart or graph of your choice) showing percentage land uses at each floor level on the street – use template headings. While the pie chart or graph should be included in your main report, include the land use survey for each building in full in the appendix.
  • Analyse the data findings from the condition survey and present the information in graphical form (e.g. pie chart or graph of your choice) showing your observations on each buildings overall condition – use template headings. While the pie chart or graph should be included in your main report, include the land use survey for each building in full in the appendix (which will include the condition of the building).
  • Take a photographic record of each building surveyed (if possible). Make sure that the survey sheets, OS maps and photographs are reference linked.

Stage 3:

Choose a single heritage building on the street for more in-depth historical analysis. This should be an ‘ordinary’ older building originally built for residential (or mixed retail and residential) use and NOT a well known landmark building such as a church or civic building.

  • Carry out a visual assessment of the chosen building in the context of the adjoining street facades. Describe the building structure, materials and condition including a photographic survey using the individual building template provided.
  • Research when the building was constructed with morphological reference (old maps). Is the buildings a protected structure?
  • Research the owners and occupiers of the building since construction with reference to the Census 1901 & 1911. Also, search for the layered statistical Census Records on the accommodation and condition of the building at the above dates.
  • Research the Griffiths Valuation and Thoms Directory and any other sources you can find.
  • Complete the attached Building Survey Template for your chosen Building. This can be included in the appendix of your report.
