Assignment 1 – Working with a Person with an Impairment – 20%
Choose a person in your care setting with an impairment e.g., stroke or arthritis, loss of vision etc. Please complete the following assignment.
Organise your submission under the following headings.
Description of the person chosen: A comprehensive description of the person, their impairment, and their needs – physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and spiritual needs. Outlining the needs that are being met and those which are not. (5 marks)
Describe the level of assistance required and in what areas: Accurate identification of the level of assistance required by the person – consider assistance requirements, mechanical aids which may help. Does the person have social and communication needs? Are there health and safety issues? Document your findings (Refer to Roper Logan and Tierney, Activities of Daily Living). (5 marks)
Addressing the needs of the person which are not being met: What action can be taken to address the needs not being met? This should include an awareness and sensitivity to the needs of the person and should include the person’s choice and involvement. It should also refer to the following: – Show clearly how you intend to improve quality of life for the person while demonstrating techniques to ensure following:
- Privacy & Dignity
- Independence
- Positive Self-Image
- Confidentiality
Clear action plan to meet the person’s needs (5 marks)
You should also draw on other learning experiences you have had. This may be additional class-based learning or through work experience or additional reading. Include evidence of reflection on the experience of working with the person described. (5 marks)

Working with a person with an Impairment.
Description of person chosen:
James is 60 years old and has an intellectual disability in epilepsy. James has been living at home with his parents up to 5 years ago. His parents are advanced in age and found it more difficult to care for James as he is overweight and his seizures although few became a source of concern for them as he risked injury. They felt unable to now deal with this issue. James is a very kind and caring man however his intellectual disability has left him with the intellectual ability of a 12-year-old. James is very affectionate and loves spending time with people and animals. He has a dog called Poppy who adores James as much as he adores her. James loves going for walks and his favorite treat was going to the zoo with people from the center for disability which he attended twice weekly when he lived at home. James has several pastimes, making pottery, coloring, playing cards and singing. James is always willing to cooperate except when he’s having a shower which he doesn’t like or after a seizure which can leave in bed bound for a few days as his muscles ache and he becomes very tired often with a headache. James has settled into life in the care home due to the unfailing dedication of his parents care staff and of course Poppy. His friend Freddy who has Down syndrome also visits fortnightly which he really looks forward to.
James’s needs are met to a very high standard although sometimes despite the frequent visits from family and friends he can become upset or sad. He then tends to isolate himself in his room . When this happens it is difficult to attend to his physical needs as he doesn’t want to engage with staff, dress, eat or drink. This can be very trying for staff resulting in some needs not being met. However they are short incidents normally lasting a day or two during which time staff will bring meals and his favorite drink 7-up to his room and allow him space and privacy alongside compassion and kindness.

Assignment 2 – Planning an outing/activity – 20%
Following on from the previous assignment, choose an outing, activity or social event that is particularly suited to the person.
Please complete the following assignment.
Organise your submission under the following headings.
Description of the person and their interests. A comprehensive description of the person’s interests – detail discussions you had with the person when choosing the activity. How was the decision reached? (5 marks)
Suitability of Outing/Activity. Research the activity/location and ensure it is a suitable choice. Identify any assistance the person may require while taking part. Consider mobility issues, toileting, dietary requirements and assistance with eating, suitable travel arrangements if needed, length of time away from home/centre, health and safety issues. Record the findings (5 marks)
Implementation and Review. Describe the following: taking part the activity, benefit to the person, Any issues arising and how they were dealt with. How did you to promote privacy, dignity, respect, independence, positive self-image and confidentiality. (5 marks)
Reflection. Take some time to reflect on this activity/outing, were there any benefits to the person, did you notice anything in particular about the person, how do you feel about it, what have you learned about the person and yourself while doing this activity/outing (5 marks)
