Linda and David Johnson are a married couple in their late 60s. Linda, 66, is a nurse, and David, 69, is a college professor. They have two grown children who live in different countries. Linda and David are approaching retirement age and have been focusing on the financial aspects of retirement planning. However, they recognize that retirement involves more than just financial security and want to prepare for the social, emotional, and spiritual changes that come with this new phase of life.

Skills Demonstration Areas of Focus Communication Skills (written, verbal and non-verbal)

Assessed throughout each skills demonstration. An essential element of providing care is to demonstrate awareness of barriers to communication caused by a medical condition and ways to overcome those barriers.

Dimensions of Wellness

The Dimensions of Wellness is a framework that is used to assess a person’s overall wellbeing.

Demonstrating an awareness of the importance of viewing wellbeing as a form of communication is central to providing care.

Empathy

The ability to understand and share the feelings of another. This is important so that the client or the client’s family feel understood and valued.

Safety & Health

A primary concern for both the client and the carer. Throughout skills demonstrations there is a focus on effective hand hygiene. Other safety and health issues include: swallow concerns, pressure areas, ulcers/ pressure sores, infection prevention & control and manual handling and people moving (principles of safe moving).

Format

Each learner will choose a sample client as a case study for their Skills Demonstration.

The sample client will have a special need that the learner will outline and provide information about how best to communicate with the client.

The learner will be assessed in a broad range of practical skills, following this format:

  1. Select one of the following medical conditions:
  • Sensory Impairment
  • Dementia
  • Chronic Obstructive Airways Disease (Emphysema, Bronchitis, Heart Failure)
  • Stroke (Cerebral Vascular Accident)
  1. Research and describe the condition to include any barrier to communication that may be caused by the condition and ways to promote effective communication.
  2. Describe the actions involved in the task* and a variety of ways to:
  • Meet client needs respectfully
  • Promote Independence and dignity
  • Maintain client safety and carer safety during the process
  • Communicate with the client, team members, multidisciplinary team & client’s family

NOTE: Mobility assisting will only be assessed for learners who provide evidence of a valid manual handling & people moving certificate.

○     Hand Hygiene and keen awareness of infection prevention techniques

○     Sensitive awareness of privacy, dignity and respect while supporting with personal care, while always prioritising clients physical safety.
