Instructions to students Aim of assessment

This assessment aims to develop the necessary academic skills in reading and
writing through the preparation of a response to a published article.

The article for this assignment can be found using the Hibernia College Library.

box please insert the following name of the article.

Prepare a response to this article based on the knowledge and skills you have accrued in the
first few weeks of the programme. You are expected to read this article and comment on its
contents, structure and applicability to current nursing care. You are also expected to read
around the topic to inform your stance within your response. For some background reading,

Presentation guidelines

Introduction (approx. 150 words)

The introduction to this assessment should include the overall aim of the article and a brief
introduction to the discussion. It should also refer to the type of publication where this
article/report/position paper is published.

It should briefly address the author’s/authors’ credentials and their standing within the field of study — as far as you can surmise from the article.

Main body/discussion (approx. 700 words)

The main body of your critique should include an evaluation of the major points made in the
article. Discuss the areas under review and discuss the relevance of it to nursing practice.
To guide your writing, consider the following questions. Was it clear, concise, focused, well-structured and backed up by evidence? What impact could this have on nursing practice?

Conclusion (approx. 150 words)

In your conclusion, you should give your concluding remarks on the overall article. Please
refer to how this may influence your future practice as a nursing student.

1,000 words, +/− 10% (excluding references) Referencing

Use and reference appropriate research in the body of your critique. Compile a reference
list at the end of your critique using the College’s version of the Harvard referencing system.
Please note that marks are allocated to academic writing skills and referencing skills.

Marking criteria

This assignment is worth 30% of the module’s overall grade.
The assignment will be marked using Hibernia College’s marking scheme.
